Wolves are highly intelligent and social animals that live in complex family groups, and as one of British Columbia’s top carnivores, they play an important role in predator-prey relationships and healthy ecosystems.

British Columbia is home to a significant population of grey wolves (Canis lupus). The Province’s current management plan estimates approximately 8,500 wolves, although because directly counting wolves across such an enormous landscape is extremely difficult, the estimated range is approximately 5,300 to 11,600.

One of the most fascinating populations is found along the coast of British Columbia. Often referred to as coastal wolves or “sea wolves,” these animals have adapted to life at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Instead of relying entirely on the large land mammals commonly associated with a wolf’s diet, coastal wolves make use of marine and shoreline food sources, including salmon and other ocean resources.

Canada is home to an estimated 50,000 to over 60,000 gray wolves, representing one of the largest wild wolf populations in the world. They live in almost every province and territory, with the exception of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

International Wolf Day also provides an opportunity to draw attention to British Columbia’s controversial wolf cull, which has been used as part of efforts to protect threatened caribou populations.

The issue is complex: provincial wildlife management has identified wolf predation as an important pressure on some endangered caribou herds, while conservation organizations argue that greater attention must be placed on the underlying loss of caribou habitat.
